U12s Beat Aberaeron

Aberystwyth U12’s v Aberaeron U12’s - Sunday 15 Jan 17

Aberystwyth 32 – Aberaeron 0

On a cold January morning, an early pitch inspection deemed the pitch playable although it was sticky and muddy in patches. Aberaeron travelled up without a full 15 but Aberystwyth were able to assist and make up a full 15, which allowed all 30 boys to play a full game.

With the home team winning the toss, they elected to play away from the club house as tradition dictates. From the kick off, Aberaeron started to pass the ball around, probing for a weakness in the home defence. The Aberystwyth back row of Reuben Minnie, Mason Lees and Osian Bebb-Worrall where able to tackle everything that was thrown against them and it was this unit that proved to be difference between the two sides as they contributed four tries between them.

The first try was scored by Sion Gould as Aberystwyth were able to soak up pressure, the pack effected a turn over then kicked for territory. With the chase being strong and the ball secured. Aberystwyth backs were able to link and send the winger over in the left corner.

The second try was a carbon copy, scored in the right corner but was finished off by flanker Minnie, who had reloaded in the centre following a previous ruck.

Just before half time, Aberystwyth outside half Reuben Price made a break then linked up with the supporting Lees. Following the ruck, scrum half Aled Morris fed Price, who was able to ghost though a disorganised defence.
With the boys who had assisted Aberaeron swapping over, the second half started slowly, but it was blindside f lanker Lees who opened it up with two barnstorming runs which ended in his two tries. Not wanting to be outdone, Number eight Bebb-Worrall took a pass in midfield and was able to score under the post, allowing the conversion to be scored.

It was pleasing to see the rucking work drills carried out in training being implemented during the game. Aberystwyth were guilty of kicking away too much ball but showed good handling skills in poor conditions.

Training continues on Friday and we travel to COBRA on Sunday.
