Late Win

Aberystwyth 7 – 0 Gorseinon

On a fine breezy afternoon Aber broke the deadlock in dramatic fashion to snatch victory from a spirited Gorseinon side in the last move of the match. Up to that point very committed defence from both teams had emphatically prevailed over attack. Aber started the game very positively and exerted early pressure in the Gorseinon 22 but came away with nothing. Aber were intent on running any ball kicked through by Gorseinon and made some ground on a number of occasions with the back three eager to attack with the ball in hand. From one such speculative Gorseinon kick into the Aber 22 they tried running it back but a forward pass gave Gorseinon a toe-hold from which they launched a series of attacks  which Aber dealt with very comfortably with their first-up tackles being particularly effective. Aber’s line-out work was a bit patchy throughout the game but from one very clean catch and drive they made fully 20m but unfortunately failed to release the ball and ended up in touch. Both centres Tom Evans and Carwyn Evans tackled strongly and won a number of penalties for their attempted jackals. Towards the end of the half Aber secured some good scrum possession and they had a number of promising attacks. The half ended with Aber on the attack down the right wing but a threatening grubber kick beyond the defence unfortunately bounced into touch with right winger Coulton steaming on to it. The feeling at half time was that Aber had tried to play too much rugby instead of maybe playing a little more territory and stretching a big Gorseinon pack a little bit more. The second half continued in much the same vein with neither team’s attacks causing the defences much bother. Aber started to kick more and turned Gorseinon back a number of times and tried to pen them in their 22. Gorseinon then had their best spell of the match and subjected Aber to a number of attacks going through multiple phases which Aber defended manfully and were eventually rewarded with a penalty to relieve the pressure. And so the stalemate continued right up to the dramatic last minute of the game. Gorseinon had a line-out midway between their 22m and 10m lines when the referee called last play. They inexplicably tried to move the ball across the backs where the ball was knocked forward straight into the hands of centre Tom Evans who broke through and passed inside to Llyr Thomas to score under the posts. He converted his try to make the final score 7 – 0. Despite the lack of scores this was a very evenly contested physical game of rugby. The tackling from both sides was uncompromising with one crunching tackle from man of the match Lee Gower in particular visibly lifting the Aber players to greater efforts. This must have been a bitter pill for Gorseinon to swallow but this welcome win for Aber keeps them well up in the top half of the table after four games.
